In a previous blog entry, I wrote about ‘Quality of Service’ (QoS) support in the X-100 system. Here, I would like to continue with another feature that impacts X-100 service and its quality: Dynamic Bandwidth Sharing, or DBS. So, what is DBS?
DBS is a feature of point-to-multipoint operation. Simply put, it means the Hub Module (HM) allocates every connected Remote Backhaul Module (RBM) the capacity it needs. In this sense, the allocated capacity to each RBM is variable and changes at different times depending on the need of the RBM and on the availability of excess capacity on other connected RBMs. The HM plays referee between the different RBMs and ensures that the requirements of each is met while ensuring the QoS requirements on each RBM independently.

In communication systems, ‘Quality of Service’ or QoS takes on different meanings that very much reflect the underlying technology. It is no different in wireless access networks, which have steadily evolved from 2G circuit-switched networks such as GSM, to 3G packet and circuit-switched networks, to 4G/LTE packet-only networks. Transmission systems followed a similar evolutionary path to become full packet systems. It’s no surprise then that ‘Quality of Service,’ which is such a key concept in packet networks, becomes an important topic in both the access and backhaul networks.

Today, BLiNQ introduced the X-100, the first product in BLiNQ’s Small Cell Backhaul Suite of solutions. The X-100 is a rapidly scalable self-organizing system that eliminates capacity hotspots. Why use non-line-of-sight (NLOS) technology in small cell applications?

Questions regarding capacity, coverage, and range are the most common questions asked of me and any other wireless product vendor. To those who are intimately familiar with wireless propagation, it can be one of the most perplexing questions to answer because the answer depends on so many factors. The coverage distance of any wireless product is important for various reasons. In access networks, coverage distance factors in the number of required cell sites and therefore has a direct impact on cost. For backhaul systems, range is important to close a link between two points. This is why I want to outline some of the key aspects that determine the range of wireless systems.

In July, ABI Research forecasted that the number of outdoor small cells will reach 1 million this year, surpassing the macrocell market. Outdoor small cells will reach 9.4 million in 2017. But the question for me, as for many of us in the industry, is how will millions of new small cell base stations be backhauled?

The scarcity of access spectrum is a widely debated topic. According to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), scarcity is a byproduct of the complex licensing scheme which is based on clearing government held spectrum that has only been utilized by Federal users for use in commercial operations using an auction process. The solution they stress lies in making spectrum available for shared as opposed to exclusive use. Hence, the recommendation was made to set aside 1,000 MHz of U.S. government held spectrum for shared use.
